Former Chairman of Kumasi Asante Kotoko Football Club, Herbert Mensah says past and present governments have shown little interest to help victims of the Accra sports stadium disaster on May 9, 2001.
 
He was emphatic that successive governments were “careless” about the people – hence, his quest to continue to lend a helping hand to all living victims over the years.
 
“If you want to achieve things, sometimes you have to ignore the state. Politicians are only interested in things that are not even important to the people. If they are interested in the people, they will help, but we know they don’t care,” he said on Peace FM’s 'Power Sports'.
 
The Accra Sports Stadium disaster claimed 126 lives after a soccer game between rivals Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko on May 9, 2001.
 
Herbert Mensah has solely over the years commemorated the year with various activities and giveaways to affected victims.

Last year, Persons with physical disabilities (PWDs) joined Herbert Mensah who is also the founder of the May 9 charity foundation in Kumasi to remember the historically sad day in Ghana’s football history.
 
The occasion also brought smiles to the faces of the persons with disabilities who received donations of food items, cash, wheelchairs and other walking aids to make their lives more comfortable.
 
Although the May 9 foundation started with the aim of directly supporting those affected families of the Accra stadium disaster to cope with their loss and pain, it has now expanded its charity activities to cover other needy groups such as persons with physical disabilities, fire victims, flood victims as well as sick children in need of medical assistance and alleviation of their suffering.
 
According to Mr Herbert Mensah, he will continue to care for both victims of the disaster and those needed despite the government’s failure to support him.
 
“I am a globalist and I believe there is a standard. I will continue to do this.” He told sports journalist, Dan Kwaku Yeboah
